In Portland we visited three of Maine's 67 lighthouses, two of which I offer below. The fog lifted to a warm, sunny day. After our lighthouse visits, we enjoyed lobster rolls at a lovely, little place in downtown Portland before re-boarding the ship.

The stink bug saga continues. They'd infiltrated the flue of our fireplace and were coming into the family room in hordes. So as we've had some very cool night of late, we decided to kill two bugs with one stone and light a fire. When Richard went out to the wood pile to remove the first log, he surprised a nest of garter snakes; harmless, but disconcerting nonetheless. I thought they would have been estivating by this time. Hope they don't intend to stay...

I'm afraid I've been so undone by the vision of a nest of snakes in my woodpile that I can barely stand to type a comment. Shudder. Cringe.
I have never heard of stink bugs coming inside. we have them in the yard, but not in numbers so as to be a nuisance.

I love scenic Maine. Lighthouses and big old Victorian homes just make me smile.

Stink bugs, huh???? Yuk.... Hope they don't visit us here... I do have one funny story to tell you.. About 2 yrs. ago, George brought a log up from the woodpile to put on our fire in the fireplace.... He did just that --and all of a sudden we smelled a skunk... I thought it was in the room with us.. The smell was horrible. We finally realized that a skunk had apparently sprayed that piece of wood. When we burned it --we got the smell.... Yuk!!!!!
I'd love to take a long trip through Maine and see ALL of their lighthouses. I have a 'thing' for light houses ---just like I do waterfalls and covered bridges....

Luckily we don't seem to have either stink bugs or snakes over here in the UK. Thank goodness!
We get July Bugs, big stupid things, but they don't smell.
Is estivating what we would term hibernating? Sleeping over the winter?
Did the smoke get rid of the bugs?

Snakes and stink bugs - yuck! At least they were harmless snakes. Hope you got rid of them though.
This is the trip we took last fall with our friends from Missouri. We had such a great time, and I have some of these same pictures from our trip! Since I just live south of Philly, you'd think I would have made it to New England before age 60! LOL We loved it, and want to go back...your pictures brought back lots of fun memories!
It's fantastic that you box! It's a great stress reliever & wonderful exercise. I'm sure you're better than you admit but no matter, so long as you enjot it!
I haven't been to a lot of states but Maine is my favorite & always will be. So you already had me there but your pictures are fabulous! Of course I adore lighthouses & Maine has some wonderful ones. The grand old house in Portland is magnificent. Oh to sit on that porch in a comfy porch swing with a good book & a cup of tea=heaven!
I hope the stink bugs leave you alone fast!

Hubby had to repair some rotten trim around the outside of one of our French doors leading out onto the deck today. This required removing the entire door and hanging a tarp over the opening FOR HOURS! Lots of stink bugs saw this as their opportune time to enter our house today. Give me the itches just thinking about one of them getting into the bed with me tonite.. eek. We get a few cold nights and they disappear, then the weather warms up and back they come again. I feel your bug pain, Kathy. As for the snakes,,, my worst nightmare!
