About Me

My photo
I am a retired English teacher and department head, the mother of three grand mother of four, and have been married to the same man for 53 years, two years after we met at college. I taught in both middle and high schools as I really love teens and in-betweens. I was also a certified Lamaze instructor, and for a short time a volunteer chaplain at Howard County General Hospital. I am a two-time cancer survivor, ovarian (2003), and breast (2019) I was born in South Philadelphia and grew up in the 'burbs with great parents, in a bilingual household. I love soft pretzels and cheesesteaks, the Phillies, the Eagles, the Orioles, and sometimes the Ravens. I love being Mom, Aunt Kathy, Nona Kathy (Kath), and Teacher. I spend a lot of time in my gardens in the spring and summer, and in the winter I plan what I'm going to plant. I also am an avid reader, cook, photographer, lover of languages, music, and four-footed furries.

Reflections (And Not on a Green Pond)

One would have to be a hanging salami to not be affected by the literal dismantling of our White House, Rose Garden, Performing Arts Center, and on and on... I'm not certain which is worse -- that or the figurative decimation of our Justice Department and system, the frequent retributions of a petulant narcissist, the hypocrisy, and the disembowelment of kindness, compassion, truth and all social mores.  And what is worse:  some still believe him.

The short of it all is I have been having difficulty 'celebrating' our 250th birthday.  I'm sad; sometimes so disgusted.  But I've been thinking...

I sense a push back, so to speak-- as I see acts of love and kindness --  smiles, people asking an elderly person in a parking lot if they could help with their groceries or return their cart, kind words among strangers waiting in line, and I've heard the line from TED LASSO being used more and more , "I appreciate you"...

This is the America I love; the Americans of whom I'm proud, those that with a small gesture create a ripple that gathers impetus and goes on forever.

And so I ask that you join me.  Celebrate the good, ignore/delete the fake Reels of ridiculously anti-social behaviors: a society at its worst. Start a wave of your own.  "For it matters not how small the beginning may seem to be, what is once well done is done forever."
