Raised a Catholic, I might have disagreed with some of the Church's teachings, but never so vehemently as I do today. And if ever I was 'on the fence' about my religion, I am no longer.
The Roman Catholic bishops have called for civil disobedience for the inclusion of birth control benefits in the health care plan. (I am NOT debating the wisdom of this at all and recognize the economic controversy). Simply put: this is not within the Catholic church's purview. They can call for Catholics to adhere to the Church's teachings; they can excommunicate any who refuse to follow Church law; but they cannot call for people to rise up against their government for refusal to follow Church doctrine.
It might serve the Catholic church well to begin to clean up their own house; recognize and make amends for the virtual condoning by looking the other way of the pedophilia and the heartache caused by a number of its priests, by tackling the corruption within the Vatican, and by feeding the impoverished with the vast wealth of its holdings.
The Catholic Church needs to stay the hell out of American politics.

Yes, it does. And it needs to stop chastising the good sisters for concentrating too much on poverty and not enough on contraception and homosexuality. And it needs to stop investigating the Girl Scouts. Patriarchy run amok. Old men trying to hang onto their power. Exceptionally poor representatives of the Jesus they claim to serve.
All churches need to stay out of politics. As I recall there is separation of church and state. I kicked all religion to the curbside years ago anyway. Just a bunch of old men that want to control the world and everyone's bedroom activity.
Amen!
Amen, Sister. Their bishops pronouncements on this issue look pretty silly in light of the fact that the folks in the pews seem to have been ignoring the church's teaching on the subject since 1960 or thereabouts.
Amen, Sister!
Great post, Kathy! I agree with you 100%, of course. The church should know that they could lose support from doing something like this. They absolutely need to clean their own house first and atone for what they've done so far.
Agree! Well said.
I'm not Catholic, but you are so right!!
Btw I don't know what happened to my google reader subscription. I thought you weren't posting, but going direct to the blog I see that you are and my updates stopped! Hopefully I'm back on track now!
Do those in the Vatican really have a clue as to how the other half (or, in their case, the other 90%) live???
I see no reason why any church, RC or Anglican, Episcopalian, whatever, should sit on wealth.
Oh, yes, you hit it on the nose. Bravo.
Kathy, Love Love Love your header... How AWESOME.
Hugs,
Betsy
Completely agree! Great post!
Love the header as well! Beautiful!!
Very, very well said. If I wanted to live in a theocracy, I could move to a garden spot like Saudi Arabia or Iran. And I, too, was raised as a(n) RC...
You can choose to excommunicate yourself. It is no big deal iif you do not believe in the teachings. You do not need to attend Mass or visit a Catholic hospital or have a child attend a Catholic school. I am not a practicing Catholic but I am against the state telling any religion what they can and cannot do in their own institutions. I don't care if it is Hassidic Jews having a place to slaughter goats in a certain way or Islamic people choosing to cover their hair. The state needs to stay out of religion. The constitution goes both ways- protection from and for religion of choice.
Isn't that what most of us outside Catholics are all about- tolerance?
Well, yep. An amen from me too!
