Several weeks ago, my husband declared war on the crabgrass that was over-taking our lawn. He traveled back and forth to the hardware store buying the more ferocious herbicides available. (Thank God napalm isn't available). The result is that within days our lawn looked a lot like Joshua Tree National Park.
Actual lawn...
Since then, we've called in Scott's who have aerated and re-seeded and we now have some 'baby grass'.
It's been a weird fall. We had such a dry end of summer that many of the trees' leaves, as I before mentioned, have just turned brown and fallen off. However, some of the maples have put on a beautiful show, and some, even after a few freezes, have yet to begun performing such as this large maple in our yard.
Soon, perhaps...

I hear you!!!!! We have many of the same problems here. After a very wet spring and 1/2 of the summer, we have been VERY dry since the end of July.... Our trees here so far aren't near as pretty OVERALL. We do have some color --but it's not all over like usual. AND--we have big trees suffering with a fungus and losing their leaves.... We finally broke down and hired "TruGreen" to work on our trees/grass/shrubs..... Hope it works.. It will take awhile to improve --but what we really need now is RAIN. Crazy!
Good Luck to you all...
Hugs,
Betsy
Pretty much the same thing in Illinois. The colors are just not as pretty. Many trees have more brown than reds. Must be something in the weather.
The trees here have been lackluster as well. But, I'm actually okay with that this year as we've yet to have snow and have even had 20 degree days lately!! Flipflops came back out! The winter is so long and gray over here, so this respite of later sun and warmth is more appreciated than the fall colors this year.
Actually, Joshua Tree National Park might look a tad better. The bare spots look planned, in a way. :-)
I understand your husband's pain. We live in a HOA that hires a third party to take care of the grass. Your husband does a better job. I think we should hire him even if we have to hire Scott's afterwards.
I love your new header! Looks like our lawn! (No, not quite yet!) Is crab grass like our couch grass - spreads like mad with underground roots?? Our lawn is about 80% moss, as the end gets little sun, but hey! who cares? its green!! I think when you get older you Just Don't Care Anymore!! We've got trees in the park whose leaves just curled up and died, but elsewhere the autumnal colours are really great! We have a Chinese Rowan that has been just amazing. If you want a peek at it in its prime, go to http://gillymaccsphotos.blogspot.com
Here, all our trees still have their leaves. It's strange. And too, we have too much grass. We live in the high desert and are surrounded by a sea of green.
Crab grass sounds much like our couch grass. Spreads quickly, far and wide by underground roots and tentacles. Dreadful stuff. But not as bad as Ground Elder, which is an umbellifer, if you let it get that far. Spreads even more quickly than couch, and if you try to dig it up, the roots break off and then fresh ground elder grows from even tiny bits of root. :(
But our lawn gets little light except in summer (due to a neighbour's hedge) and moss is rampant. We now take the stance that moss is green, and let it alone!
Lol! That was a crack up!!!!
Hope the new lawn comes lush and beautiful … sans crab grass.
Happy Fall Kathy!!!
